Aadhaar-PAN Linking Last Date June 30, 2021: Linking the two is compulsory to file income tax returns

The government has set the last date for linking the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with the Aadhaar card as June 30, 2021. In case the PAN card is not linked with Aadhaar card, it is likely to become inoperative and may attract a late fee of Rs 1,000. Earlier, the government had set the deadline as March 31, 2021, to link the two identification documents, after extending it several times. On March 31, the last date was again extended to June 30 to provide relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aadhaar, also known as the Unique Identity number, is a 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number that is allotted by the Income Tax (I-T) department. In September 2018, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act, and ruled it does not violate the right to privacy when one agrees to share biometric data.

Linking the PAN and Aadhaar card is a simple process as the Income Tax department allows individuals to link the two unique identification numbers on its website. Also, it is now compulsory to link the Aadhaar number with PAN in order to complete income-tax-related activities such as filing returns on income.

Here’s how you can link your PAN with your Aadhaar card online:
