As one of the most important festivals celebrated in the south Indian Telugu sates , Sankranti is celebrated on an exceptionally grand scale. The festivities go on for four days. This year, Sankranti will be celebrated from January 14, 2023 to January 17, 2023.The harvest festival is celebrated with much fervour across the country. Makar Sankranti celebrates the sun’s shift into Capricorn (also called Makar in Sanksrit).
It is around the same time that sun starts making transition towards North. From this point onwards, the cold, short and wintery days start giving way to slightly longer and warmer days. The limited sunlight takes a toll on crop harvesting, which is why when the sun moves towards North, the country rejoices at the prospect of warm days and longer spell of sunlight. They celebrate the auspicious occasion with a lot of delicious food, folk tales, songs and dance rituals.

This year, Sankrantil began on January 14 and ends on January 17. The first day of Sankrantil is called Bogi, or Bhogi Sankrantil, and is celebrated in honour of Lord Indra. Day -1 January 14, 2023-Bhogi
The first day of Sankrantil is called Bhogi Sankrantil, when Indra, the rain god is thanked for the abundant harvests. Useless household products like utensils and old clothes are thrown in the fire to put an end to the evils of the previous year. people sing and dance around the bonfire and welcome the summers, the new harvesting season.
Day -2 January 15, 2023- Sankranti
On this day, rice is boiled in milk outside the premises of the house in an earthen pot. The milk is made to overflow from the vessel, symbolizing prosperity. This ritual is performed outside the house, as an offering to the sun.
Day- 3, January 16, 2023-Kanuma
Known as Mattu Sankrantil, this day is dedicated to the cattle. It is often believed that a farmer and is land is futile without the cattle. Cows are decorated with designed cloth, beads, bells and garlands. They are fed with rice preparations. On this day, people abstain from consuming milk and milk products as a mark of respect to the cows. Shiva and his bull, Basava are worshipped on this day.
Day- 4, January 17, 2023-Mukkanuma
Kannum Sankrantil is the last day of Sankrantil. A pooja is performed by the women of every household early in the morning before bathing. A turmeric leaf, rice and sugarcane are the main items used for the pooja. It is performed by women of all ages, in order to pray for the prosperity of all the male members of the family.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated widely among Hindu devotees. In Allahabad, thousands gather near the banks of Ganga for Maagh Mela. Priests and devotees alike sit and meditate in the holy vicinity. They also offer their prayers to the Sun God or Surya. Celebrated on 14th or 15th January, the Sankranti celebrations coincide with that of Lohri, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Maagh Bihu in Assam, Poush Sakranti in Bengal. For the agricultural community, the period is especially significant as this is the time when they begin harvesting their rabi crops. In many regions people wake up early, bathe and indulge in kite flying competitions while munching onto some signature delicacies.

Therefore, it is considered the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture.
