Sharad Purnima Significance

The Kojagari Purnima concerns the observance of the Kojagara Vrata. People perform this Vrata under the moonlight after fasting for the day. Lakshmi the Hindu Goddess of Wealth, is significantly worshipped on this day as it is believed to be her birthday. Lord Indra, the God of Rains, along with his elephant Airavata is also worshipped. It is believed that on the night of Sharad Purnima, the raas of Radha Krishna also takes place along with their Gopis.

It is believed that a human being has certain qualities and it is associated with kala (performing art, a talent or skill). The combination of sixteen different kalas creates a perfect human personality that comes out in the form of the moon on Sharad Purnima. According to Hindu culture, only Lord Krishna was born with all sixteen kalas and he is the complete incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is also said that Lord Rama was born with only twelve kalas.

Not only does the moon shine with all sixteen kalas but its rays also have certain healing properties that nourish the body and soul. It is also believed that the moon rays on the day of Sharad Purnima drip nectar. Traditionally, to take advantage of the divine phenomenon, rice-kheer, a famous Indian sweet dish made of cow milk, rice and sugar, is prepared and left in the moonlight for the whole night. In the morning, the kheer said to embody an essence of nectar in it, is distributed among all family members.

Sharad Purnima, rice kheer is prepared and then left overnight under the moon to let its light invigorate the delicacy. In the morning, after taking bath, the kheer is distributed among family members as prasad. Some also give dakshina to Brahmins along with the prasad. In some regions, people observe fast and night vigil to please Goddess Lakshmi. You can worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra by lighting diya in ghee and with incense sticks.

In Gujarat, the festival is known as Sharad Poonam. In Brij region, it is called Raas Poornima whereas in Odisha it is celebrated as Kumar Purnima. It is believed the Lord Shiva’s son Kartikeya was born on this day, hence, unmarried girls who wish for handsome husband worship the god on this day.
