Directorate of Government Examination Simply called as DGE and was established Feb, 1975, It regulates, controls and developers, secondary education and Higher Secondary education in the state. It provides varied courses in orders to equip students for different occupations to prepare them for university education and to equip them for university education and to equip them for various culture purposes. It examines those who have completed a prescribed course, study and awards certificates to the successful candidates. The first Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination in the year 1911.

There are 7-Regional offices in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelvelli, Chennai, Cuddalore and Vellore. The board affiliates all state schools, private schools ans colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. The board functions extensively and covers wide area including every aspect of education. The board also arranges for the preparation , compilation, improvement publication, printing and distribution of text books for 1st to 12th are also done by board.The Board conducts the examination each year and provide the certification to qualified students.
Functions of the Board
- Collecting data relevant to the student appearing for various exams from school.
- Constitution of centers to conduct the exam.
- Printing and supply of question papers to the exam centers.
- Supply of stationary articles to the exam centers
- Collection of private candidates data through nodal centre via online.
- Supply of printed nominal Roll of candidates registered for the exam and issue of hall tickets to private candidates.
- Appointment officials to conduct the exam at various centers , based on the proposals received from inspecting officers.
