Delhi Metro Phase 4: Project Status, Upcoming Corridors, Targets-

The Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension section on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor is the first underground section in Delhi Metro Phase 4. Amid the pandemic, Delhi Metro authorities completed the tunneling of 500 metres of one of the 2.8 kilometre long twin tunnels. The casting of over 50 per cent of the tunnel segments in the casting yard is also completed. The first of the twin tunnels on the stretch is expected to be completed by September this year.

Delhi Metro authorities also erected the first ever T-girder of the fourth phase at the Mukarba Chowk last month. The T-girders are pre-tensioned and are cast at the yard in Mundka, according to DMRC. After the casting process, these girders are brought to the site and launched with the help of two 400 metric tonnes (MT) capacity cranes. The length of each girder is 37 metres and the weight is around 90 MT.

The piers over which the first girder was erected are about 18 meters from the ground level. Additionally, the load testing of the launcher is done at Majlis Park and the launching of the u-girder will begin with the launcher on the same stretch between Majlis Park and Mukarba Chowk section.

The casting of T-girders, U-girders, the erection of U-girders, pier caps, construction of piers at the station, and viaduct locations were carried out between the Majlis Park – Maujpur corridor. The work on Delhi Metro’s fifth bridge over the river Yamuna is in progress as part of this corridor near the Signature Bridge. This metro corridor is significant because its implementation will complete the entire ring of connectivity on the Delhi Metro Pink Line.

The casting yard at Panchsheel Park was prepared for casting work with the installation of crucial equipment such as the erection of gantry cranes, on the Tughalakabad – Aerocity corridor. The casting work of u-girders and piles is in progress on the upcoming corridor. This corridor will connect the Kashmere Gate – Raja Nahar Singh Violet Line with the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line.

Four major civil tenders for the underground sections of Delhi Metro Phase 4 were floated in April and May 2021. These are being funded by the loan received from Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA, according to DMRC.

Three tenders are for the Tughalakabad-Aerocity corridor, and one is for the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor. Presently, all tenders are at different stages of processing.

Currently, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is engaged in the construction of 65 km of new lines across three priority corridors as part of its fourth phase. The corridors are expected to be completed by 2025, but targets will be reviewed amid the COVID-19 constraints.
