The word ‘Guru’ is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Gu’ meaning ‘darkness or ignorance’ and ‘Ru’ meaning ‘removal’. Hence, Guru is believed to be the removal of darkness from our lives. The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. 

Guru Purnima is one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals. It is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of ‘Ashadha’. On this day, disciples pay respect to their gurus. The word ‘guru’ is derived from two Sanskrit words, Gu and Ru, which together means the one who dispels the darkness and takes towards the light. Thus, ‘guru’ simply refers to the spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings.

Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima because the sage who wrote the famous Hindu epic Mahabharata, was born to Satyavati and Sage Parashar on this day. Some devotees offer prayers to Veda Vyasa on this day for knowledge and wisdom.

Guru Purnima-Mythological Significance

In the yogic tradition, the day is celebrated as the occasion when Lord Shiva became the first Guru after he began the transmission of yoga to the Saptarishis.

Guru Purnima is believed to be the day when Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa – author of Mahabharata was born to sage Parashara and Satyavati. Hence the day is also called as Vyasa Purnima. Sage Vyasa worked for the cause of vedic studies by gathering all the vedic hymns and further dividing into four parts based on rites and characteristics. The four parts are namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva.

Guru Purnima is celebrated in the month of June and July as per the Georgian calendar. This year, Guru Purnima will be observed on July 13.

According to Drikpanchang, Purnima tithi begins on July 12, 2022, at 04:00 AM and ends on July 15, 2022, at 12:06 Am.

On this day, many devotees observe fast and offer prayers to their spiritual gurus. Devotees even visit temples to seek the blessings of their guru. But this year, due to the ongoing pandemic, people are advised to stay inside the house and celebrate it with their families.

People who believe in astrology, on this day, pray to Guru Graha (planet Jupiter). It is one of the most auspicious planets in the zodiac sign.
