India tour of England: R Ashwin picks up 5-wicket haul in county championship for Surrey ahead of Test series

Ravichandran Ashwin could not have asked for a better platform to prepare for the upcoming 5-Test series against England. The veteran India off-spinner was in full flow on Day 4 of the County Championship match between Surrey and Somerset at the Oval in London, picking up his 49th 5-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Ashwin, who joined Surrey for a one-off match before the England Tests, picked up a 5-wicket haul in just 13 overs during which he bowled 4 maidens and conceded only 23 runs. Somerset began their 2nd innings 189 run lead but Ashwin spun a web around their top-order batsmen, picking up 3 top-order wickets.

Ashwin finished with 6/27 as Somerset were bowled out for 69 in their second innings. However, Somerset had a healthy lead of 258 on a pitch that was taking plenty of turn. Somerset have two high-quality spinners in England’s left-arm spinner Jack Leach and van der Merwe.

Ashwin drew first blood by removing Somerset’s wicketkeeper-batsman and opener Steven Davies for 7. He picked up Tom Lammonby’s wicket with a span of 4 runs and struck again to remove captain James Hildreth for 14.
