National Tourism Day is celebrated on January 25 every year across the country. This day is observed by the government to encourage tourism and explain the essential role of tourism in the growth of the country. India is a diverse nation and it offers several forms of tourism including cultural, nature, heritage, educational, sports, rural, eco-tourism, etc. This diversity of India makes it a prime attraction for tourists.
Known for its famous hand-woven Ikat saris, Pochampally was selected as one of the best tourism villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in November 2023. Programmes including cultural events, light and sound shows will also be organised at 77 major tourism centres and all tourist destinations across the country.
India Tourism Day History
As per a report by Times Now digital, it is not known when exactly this day came about. However, in the year 1948, a Tourist Traffic Committee was set up to promote tourism. While the committee’s first regional offices were opened in the same year in Delhi and Mumbai, more offices in Kolkata and Chennai were added in 1951.
Later, in 1958, a department specifically pertaining to tourism was established under the Ministry of Tourism and Communication. It was headed by the Deputy General in the rank of Joint Secretary, the report added. India is among the oldest civilisations in the world and offers diversity and multiculturalism. The country has a rich heritage and attractive places to visit, making it a popular tourist destination. The day is celebrated in the country to aware people of the growth prospects of the tourism sector and how it impacts India’s economic development.

This year, the theme of National Tourism Day is ‘Dekho Apna Desh’. Coronavirus pandemic has intensely affected the tourism sector due to the restrictions on travel. The Ministry of Tourism has been organizing seminars around the theme.
